The Taste of Tanzania celebrates progress, innovation, and opportunity from farm to glass. Cheers to the taste of transformation!

A Flavorful Celebration of Tanzanian Innovation

November 2024, Tamu Tamu Tanzania brought The Taste of Tanzania to life with two extraordinary cider-tasting events highlighting the power of innovation and sustainability. These events showcased how Tanzanian-grown apples are being transformed into premium products, proving the humble fruit’s potential to revolutionize industries.

  • November 9: The first event took place in Iringa, featuring nine distinct Tamu Tamu ciders paired with expertly crafted pizza.
  • November 16: The excitement moved to Dar es Salaam, in collaboration with a local brewing company, spotlighting apple-based beverages like fresh juice and artisan cider.

These events were more than tastings—they were immersive experiences into the growing apple value chain within the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT). Every sip of cider celebrated the immense potential of Tanzanian apples to fuel agro-processing, create jobs, and boost the economy.

Innovation and Sustainability at the Core

Tamu Tamu Tanzania is leading the way with a commitment to sustainability and innovation:

  • Local Adaptation: Over 50 apple varieties suited to Tanzania’s climates have been introduced, enabling smallholder farmers to diversify and boost their incomes.
  • Empowering Farmers: High-quality seedlings, technical training, and reduced reliance on imports ensure resilience within the apple value chain.
  • Direct Sourcing: Tamu Tamu purchases apples directly from local farmers for its processing plant, ensuring fair benefits for growers.

The Versatility of Tanzanian Apples

The cider-tasting events demonstrated the diverse potential of apples:

  • Apple Juice: Unfermented, refreshing, and capturing the essence of Tanzania’s orchards.
  • Cider (Apple Beer): A fermented, artisanal beverage with rich flavors gaining popularity locally and internationally.

These value-added products drive agro-processing innovation, create jobs, and position SAGCOT as a leader in agricultural solutions.

Transforming Tanzania’s Apple Industry

The apple industry offers vast opportunities for value addition across multiple sectors:

  • Beverages: Fresh juice, cider (non-alcoholic and hard), apple wine, smoothies, and even apple brandy or vinegar.
  • Snacks and Culinary Uses: Dried apples, chips, candies, apple puree, butter, jam, and baked goods like pies, muffins, and bread.
  • Fermented Products: Apple vinegar, pickled apples, and pectin serve culinary and industrial purposes.
  • Health and Beauty: Apple extracts and oils are used in cosmetics for their antioxidant properties.

This versatility enriches value chains, empowers communities, and drives economic growth. Tamu Tamu Tanzania exemplifies the power of collaboration in agriculture. The Apple Value Chain collaboration goes beyond growing apples—it creates opportunities, connects farmers to markets, and builds a sustainable, export-ready industry.

Together, they are turning Tanzanian apples into symbols of progress, resilience, and innovation.

Cheers to The Taste of Tanzania!
